Clifton Virginia Real Estate

It’s hard to believe a small town like Clifton still exists just outside our Nation’s Capital. It has been home to everything from politicians to farmers and even a survivor from the Titanic. Sited 25 miles from Washington, D.C., the town has been around since the 1700s with much of the old world charm still in place. Clifton was initially a plantation and later became a railroad town. In 1869, a post office was established and the town started growing with stores and a school. On March 10, 1902 Clifton Station was established as a town by Charter from the Virginia General Assembly. It became the first town in Fairfax County. In 1985, the entire town was named to the National Register of Historic Places . Some 63 Clifton buildings were added to the register at that time. Towards the late 1970s and early 1980s development was starting to edge near Clifton, raising concerns that the new construction could ruin the beauty of the town. In the 1980s, an ordinance was enacted stating that only one building could be placed on 5-acre (20,000 m2) parcels that had not already been divided. Single-family homes were constructed in the southern and eastern parts of Clifton while land to the north became equestrian areas.

Today, there remains a post office, a legion post, 2 churches, several quaint shops, businesses, restaurants and an award winning ice cream shop owned by the former town mayor.

Clifton hosts several community events each year including October's Clifton Day—an arts and crafts spectacular, the Haunted Trail at Halloween and a 5k run called the “Clifton Caboose Twilight Run.” There's also an antique car show, wine festival and a homes tour. It's also home to the famous Bunnyman Bridge and it's own winery called Paradise Springs.
